Bringing Language Arts to Life through Photography

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are tired of being bored to tears by teachers talking at them! I teach 4th grade in an elementary school located in a high-need, under-served and underrepresented community located in South Central Los Angeles. Half of my students are English Language Learners and about 85% of all of my students scored far below basic on the California State Test in Language Arts and Math. My school was recently identified as low-performing school and was taken over by the Mayor's "Partnership for Los Angeles Schools" project. The "Partnership" and my school are looking for new, dynamic and alternative ways of teaching in order to achieve high levels student learning.

Many of my students are English Language Learners. I need to introduce elements of Language Arts (such as adjectives, nouns, vocabulary, etc...) in an engaging way. One example of my project is this: instead of having students look up words in the dictionary and copy down definitions I plan on having them investigate the meanings of those words through the use of photography. The students will be in groups of 3. They will be given a vocabulary word for that week (each group will have a different word). First we will discuss the definitions as a class using our vocabulary strategies. Then we will take it a step further by having the students create a memorable photograph of what that word means. For example, one of our words this week was "snare". So the students would have to take a picture of "a trap" in some way that involves each student in the group (one is the photographer and the other two are the subjects of the photograph). The students have to figure out how they would convey that meaning through the photograph. Then these photos would be posted in the classroom along with the word and its meaning.

The resources we need are digital cameras. I have two of my own, however I have 37 students and 2 is just not enough. This project will help students because they will begin to discover new and challenging vocabulary words in a hands on, visual way. My English Language Learners will especially benefit because they will be able to visualize what they are learning rather than just having to listen to me tell them about it or looking the words up and writing them down in a rote fashion.

By donating to this project you will help students in one of the poorest, most under-represented areas of the country have access to technology and resources that they would not otherwise have. They will have the ability to learn in a highly productive and engaging way and will therefore be far more prepared for college and life in the 21st century.
