Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you know how easy it was to hold the attention of 20 kindergrtners? It was great!
But times have changed, now I have 34 kindergrtners, including special education students with autism and down syndrome. The only way to hold their attention is with the use of technology in the classroom.
I have an incredible set of 34 students full of energy, curiosity, and very little attention spans for the start of the school year.
They attend a Title I school, with a 70% free and reduced lunch. They come from single families, families with 2 jobs to maintain their shelter, and jobless families living in shelters.
Now more than ever I must continue introducing lessons with interactive technology because regardless of where these students come from I must continue providing them with 21st century skills needed to succeed in a challenging economy.
My Project
Holding the attention span of 20 students even 27 students was not as challenging as holding the attention of 34 students who are 4 and 5 year olds, even for the greatest teacher.
Technology has been my ally in holding their attention long enough to introduce new lessons and skills to these 34 diverse young minds, to provide animated power points lessons in math, science, and language arts.
But unfortunately I am losing this battle since our old laptop freezes every day. We need a new laptop that can handle the tear and wear of kindergarten that will not freeze. The new digital camera will provide hands-on technology to make picture books, retold stories, and make vocabulary lessons. Adding 2 Ipod Touches will also provide differentiate education to all my students, especially the special students.
Having students interact with the technology by taking pictures, recording and recounting stories, and seeing their pictures in a power point lesson teaches students to learn.
The class sizes have gone up in the last couple of years.
But I am still accountable to teach the same set of skills and lessons to 20 and now the new class size of 34 students. The only way that I know how is by integrating technology in my lessons and having interacting technology for my students.
I am giving you an invitation to help me accomplish these challenging task to keep educating these students regardless of how big they allow these classes to get.
Thank you for your time!
