I teach in a public magnet school that is also the only IB middle school in the county. Students from all over the school district are able to attend the school, because the selection process is through a lottery system. Since our students come from all over the district, we are able to enjoy a culturally diverse student body. We also have a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds, and not everyone has access to technology. I want to level the playing field and help them all gain the skills needed in today's world.
My students are enthusiastic and hardworking, so I want to give them the tools they need to succeed.
When given the opportunity and the correct tools, my kids constantly amaze me with their creativity and critical-thinking skills. I don't want to limit their academic endeavors and ability to grow simply because they don't have access to technology .
My Project
All of my students love to use technology in the classroom, but they don't always love studying civics and history. Add computers to any lesson and suddenly everyone is interested. However, we don't have enough computers for everyone.
Incorporating Lenovo Chromebooks into daily lessons allows students to improve their technology skills and literacy skills.
Sometimes it is difficult to get students interested in ancient civilizations, so I must find creative ways to help them understand why the topic is important. By researching primary sources, students can read and see first-hand accounts of the past, which helps them make connections between the past and present. Students can then demonstrate their own learning by creating and sharing projects, such as Powtoon videos.
The laptops can also be used to participate in Google Classroom activities to research current events and connect those events to the units we study.
