This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are incredibly resilient, curious, and hardworking. Many come from migrant families and are often the only English speakers in their homes besides their siblings. Despite these challenges, they show up every day eager to learn, support one another, and push themselves to succeed. However, many of them rarely see their own experiences reflected in the books they read. I want to change that by providing stories that validate their identities and show them that their voices matter.

Every student deserves to see themselves in the stories they read.

The House on Mango Street gives my students that opportunity. With a Latina protagonist navigating themes of identity, culture, and belonging, this novel allows them to connect literature to their lives meaningfully. These books will spark essential discussions, strengthen literacy skills, and inspire a more profound love for reading. Having 30 copies in English and 10 in Spanish in our school library means all teachers can incorporate it into their lessons, reaching even more students.

I want my students to know they are seen, valued, and capable of achieving great things. This book will help them grow as readers and inspire confidence in their identities and dreams.
