Help me give my students the opportunity to learn about the moving water systems and topography of the Earth using modeling with stream tables and topography models.
The population of students I teach this year come from varied backgrounds and have mixed abilities, most are low achievers. The students are more successful when given materials to make the learning hands-on. The program is still in its infant stages in our school and the materials are not available to help reinforce the learning and bring the learning alive. Having materials to put into their hands and manipulate will help them to build greater understandings. Freshman require rich experiences to help them to transition to learning behaviors needed in high school to be successful. Thanks.
My Project
South Carolina is a state that has many different geographic regions from the mountains to the shore. The state also has a tremendous amount of rivers and streams. The area closest to the coast has many islands and students must often cross bridges to travel to school.
Flooding and the movement of water is a hot topic dominating the news in our school's region.
The majority of the materials that have been requested for the grant are stream tables so that students can examine the mechanics of streams and rivers as a hands-on experience. The area where our school is located experiences flooding on a regular basis. Students will learn the basics of the river structures, how water moves into and out of streams as well as examine why certain river characteristics cause areas to flood in their town.
The other material requested in this order is a kit designed to allow students to examine the topography of the land that also mimics the features found in our state.
These materials will allow students to increase the skills and processes of science as well as enrich critical thinking skills and build strength in the areas of collaboration with peers and communication in order for them to be college and career ready.
