Bringing Dystopian Societies to Life

My Students

My school is a small school with only one to two classes per grade level. My 7th grade homeroom students will spend 3 hours in our room every day and my other classes of 7th and 8th grade will be with me for 90 minutes! This means my Literature classroom will be a home away from home for students. I want to be sure the room is comfortable, colorful and welcoming to each of the diverse individuals coming in every day.

My Project

My students are currently studying the genre of Dystopian Literature. They are a part of book club groups in which they are reading a high-interest Dystopian Series. They have been so engaged by their books and reading, that they have been flying through their books and reading ahead of their self generated calendars.

My students will be continuing on with the Divergent and Uglies series in order to deepen their understanding of characters, themes and connections between Dystopian Literature and society.

As we read, students will be working on having academic discussion with their book club groups and representing their ideas through both written responses and visuals. At the end of the unit, students are created a graphic essay to represent their theme and literary essay after that.
