Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the most at-risk students at our school. Most of my students come from high poverty, encountered traumatic life experiences, and face many challenges. In order for our students to succeed and have a positive learning experience their social/emotional needs must be meet.
The more I read, the more I became convinced that the Dog Therapy Program would be extremely beneficial to our population at the high school.
Therapy dogs provide an instantly calming environment. If a student is sad, angry, frustrated, confused – the presence of the dog provides not only a sense of peace but also the ability to bring emotions in check and be able to discuss what the prevailing issue(s) might be.
My Project
The Dog Therapy Program's mission is to enhance the social and emotional well-being of high-risk adolescents and improve student behaviors. There is a significant amount of research that demonstrates the benefits of dog therapy. Unfortunately, there aren’t many schools that have yet implemented this valuable resource to serve our students.
Some of our adolescents at E.
S. High School have encountered a wide variety of traumatic life experiences. Many of our students have to walk through dangerous neighborhoods to get to school. Other of our students are dealing with a variety of clinically diagnosed life stressors. We want our students to have the additional support that will allow them to reduce their feelings of stress, helplessness, and anger. We want our students to get to school and feel more relaxed, empowered and prepared to learn. Based on our research, we are confident that a therapy dog program will help our students thrive.
With your support, E. S. High School will be the first school in Newark, New Jersey, to implement a Pet Therapy program as an innovative solution that will enhance our students social and emotional well-being.
