Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I describe any of our middle school scholars to friends and family, the words active, excited, and inquisitive always come to mind. They truly enjoy coming to school, learning new things, and giving their all to everything they do in and out of the classroom.

Our tight-knit middle school is made up of scholars of various abilities and backgrounds, but everyone strives to give them as much of the world as possible.

Within our small Title I school, we have future lawyers, counselors, artists, engineers, and comedians. They truly are an amazing bunch of scholars!

My Project

Exposing my scholars to the vast world beyond their hometown is paramount to them becoming citizens of the world. As a reading teacher, I enjoy doing this as much as possible through literature.

By getting books by diverse authors in my scholars' hands, our class will not only meet (and exceed) the state standards, they will experience, engage, and appreciate diverse voices that they may not encounter in their everyday experiences.

I am lucky to have two groups of scholars that I alternate with throughout the day, so we can carry on two dual literature studies with each class using Trevor Noah's Born A Crime and Ellen Oh's Flying Lessons & Other Stories. Both books are true gifts in juvenile non-fiction, and I know the scholars will appreciate the many lessons each can give.
