Bringing Diverse Texts into Middle School Reading Class
Help me give my students access to socially just, inclusive, and empowering young adult novels that they can see their identities told in these wonderful stories that I have hand picked! My class library needs titles like these!
I teach 6th Grade students in Reading and writing at a Title One city public middle school. Within my classroom is an incredibly diverse range of abilities, identities, languages, and home countries. My students are energetic, creative, and critical thinkers. In my reading and writing classes, they are here to blaze their own trail and be their authentic self while finding ways to challenge the status quo.
All of my 6th graders are navigating their own challenges, and my class is meant to be a safe space to work through those challenges in a supported environment.
As students process moving homes, being new to the country, family or peer struggles, or just being in middle school, I want my students to see themselves grow and change in my class. Especially at the middle school level, this social-emotional learning piece is critical to future success and happiness.
As a teacher, I strive to create an empowering and socially just classroom that reflects the diversity in my students. I aim for them to be seen and heard in what we read and write.
My Project
The titles I have selected for this project all share two main things: they are incredibly popular YA literature, and they tell stories often untold in our society.
My goal with this project is for each student to be able to read a book where they see themselves, their identities, their struggles, and their experiences reflected in the story.
I believe that providing students this opportunity is pivotal to increasing engagement in reading, as well as giving my 6th graders a feeling that they belong and are seen in this world.
In my classroom, approximately 50% of the class period is spent on independent reading, giving students ample time to read and engage with a text. This project will help maximize that time and in turn increase student reading growth, because of the wide range of diverse texts available to my classroom community. Students not only will see major improvements on their reading, but feel substantially more welcomed and included into the classroom and our educational system.
