Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is in an urban area riddled with poverty, drugs and violence. My students know poverty of all kinds - financial, linguistic and digital. More than eighty percent live below the poverty line. Half are language learners, nearly one-third have no access to the Internet through even a smartphone in their homes.
My students are quick, curious and motivated.
They eagerly participate in whatever we are learning. They soak up experiences and challenges with gusto, and they are deserving of any and every opportunity to broaden and deepen their understanding of the world and the opportunities around them.
My Project
With the advent of video games and television, children no longer rely on their imagination and creativity to bring their dreams to life. I want my students to know the creative power of their own minds. With a Cricut Maker, the Cricut software, and various building materials, my students can imagine, design and create whatever they see in their minds. They can design and build 3D sets for their stories then use stop animation to create a short film. They can design and create obstacle courses for our classroom robots to navigate. They can participate in engineering challenges by experimenting with the strengths and weaknesses of different materials and shapes and determine their suitability for various tasks. All of these tasks will require trial and error and experimentation. As they experiment and revise their plans, students will learn that mistakes become meaningful when we learn from them. They will begin to see themselves as creators and inventors rather than simply the consumers of what others design.
What they can design, test and invent is limited only by their own imaginations.
