Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Picture books are not the only way towards advanced literacy in early elementary! Exposure to a variety of texts will enhance their skills in reading, writing and communicating.
I teach a blended class of outstanding first and second grade students who are eager to increase their skills in literacy, specifically the English language.
I teach at a Title I school in a suburb of Cook County, Illinois. 75% of our school's students are English language learners and 84% come from low-income households. Despite these circumstances, my students come to school committed to gaining as much knowledge as possible. Their curiosity is what fuels their learning in our classroom.
My Project
While all students enjoy a story book, there are many other types of texts that will enhance their literacy skills when exposed to. I consider non-fiction texts a significant part of helping students learn, and this can be accomplished through a class subscription to Time For Kids magazine. Each child will have access to a weekly edition to the magazine which provides short excerpts on relevant, non-fiction topics that students find engaging. The colorful pictures and student-friendly language makes current events accessible to even our youngest students.
Having a subscription to Time For Kids magazine will provide for authentic learning opportunities and allow students to apply their prior knowledge, form connections, and analyze current events.
Through higher-level activities and discussion, their literacy exposure will be broadened and elevated as they enhance their language skills.
