Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Textbooks throw facts at us but where is the real world tie? Students see pictures of what the White House looks like but may never get to tour it. These books will be a way for students to “tour” different places and understand culture.
I teach Social Studies and need something to help grab my students’ attention when we talk about world geography and culture.
My favorite way to yank them in is to tell them stories they won't find in their text books. The suggested books are great for taking the students to the location and exposing them to the countries beliefs and customs. Our school is a Title I school where about 75% of our students are on free and reduced price lunch. I can only put so much money of my own into the classroom and would not ask the parents because I know that they are hardworking people that need the money themselves.
My Project
The textbooks are boring. They were boring when I was in school and not much has changed. Knowing how much I disliked reading fact after fact in the book, I realized that I could get the same information if someone told it to me in story form and showing them what it looks like. These books are my visual with additional information that our textbooks do not have. Showing them these books also changes the tediousness of our textbooks. I want to pull in more resources so that these students will gain an understanding and respect of different cultures.
By helping purchase these books, you are helping students grasp a better understanding of world cultures.
These supplemental resources would be a great enrichment tool for students to dive into our history.
