Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have amazingly wonderful students who need the opportunity to learn good coping skills and self-regulation. I am fortunate to be an elementary school counselor to over 650 amazing students in grades PK-5! My students come from diverse backgrounds. Unfortunately, we do have students who come from unstable homes, are homeless, have experienced trauma, move homes frequently, etc. in addition to dealing with the pandemic. All of this leads to struggles in learning, attention, behavior, emotions, and forming relationships. Furthermore, as we have returned face-to-face during this extraordinary time in our existence, we have seen a huge decline in self-regulation and social skills.
My goal is to create a space where I can teach my students social skills, self-regulation, conflict resolution, and problem-solving; somewhere I can teach mindfulness practices, calming techniques, as well as lead groups on these topics.
My Project
Building a counselor's classroom for social-emotional learning means making the students feel welcome, included, and have the tools to support their growth. My goal is to add flexible seating to meet the needs of each student, to supply fidget tools to help with focus and emotional regulation, and create projects to bring out my student's creativity. I would love to continue my work with 5th graders building a yearly leadership group during which we could use the Cricut and heat press to make our own shirts and create inspirational quotes to put around the school for all students.
My 5th-grade leadership group can help to support the social-emotional climate of the entire school while also building their leadership skills and how better to feel included in that group but with our personally created shirts.
