Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a computer engineer turned high school teacher because I am passionate about bringing engineering into the classroom. My students are excited to learn about technology, computer science, and engineering despite having few opportunities for exposure. Eighty percent of our students are low-income and seventy percent represent under-served populations. My engineering class is the only engineering class at our school and there are no computer science offerings. I talk with students about engineering in my physics classes and they have many great questions. They are so curious to understand their world and a great eagerness to seek out information on their own.
My Project
Funding of this project would allow me to hit the ground running in the Fall with a proven curriculum for successfully teaching AP Computer Science to my students. Students were so hungry for computer science, we are able to offer three classes in this first year!
Students would directly benefit from the quality instructional units, resources, and activities that I will receive at this intensive week of professional development.
The program has online components the week before this trip and the week after this trip, so I will also benefit from the thorough guided walk-through of the year as I learn how to be the computer science teacher my students need.
