My students need the rug and balance balls for comfort in the classroom. The cubbies are due to the lack of space to put their belongings (not even have a class set of hooks).
Every student of mine is different and special in their own way. Often times resources for our children are limited, and I want to provide them with all the appropriate materials and environment to help them access their education and be in a classroom that is comfortable and safe.
My 17 children come from all different backgrounds, and more than 3 languages could be heard in my class at any given time.
I spend a lot of time at the beginning of the school year to make my class a comfortable, welcoming environment for my students. In 1st grade, children spend a lot of time on the rug. Whole group discussions occur on the rug, whether they're taking in a lesson or reading comfortably.
The students work hard and spend most of their day in my first grade classroom. I'd like to treat my students with a comfortable environment that allows them safety and the feeling of security.
My Project
My classroom is a place where students spend a majority of their time, and I want it to be a comfortable place, where the children feel safe and vulnerable enough to learn.
The items on my list will help benefit the needs and improve the learning of my 17 students; as well as help me create a warm, welcoming classroom.
I put a classroom rug on my list, because every year, I spend my own money on rugs that get ruined. This rug would allow my students to be comfortable where they spend a lot of their day. My students enjoy reading on the rug, and it will add a level of comfort to their day. Also, going on the need of safety and comfort in my classroom, the bundle of flexible seating would be for my students during reading. Guided Reading is something we do daily in the classroom, and these chairs would allow the students a place where they could wiggle and move, but still concentrate on reading. It would be more child appropriate than the big metal seats they have to lug over to the table. These chairs could also be used in flexible seating throughout the day.
In my classroom, the students do not have individual cubbies, but hooks (not even enough for every student). In the winter, these students have all of their snow gear, plus their every day school day needs, and have no where to put it all. If I received these cubbies, it would help the students from losing their belongings, as well as have a safe spot where they could keep their stuff without it getting stepped on and perhaps ruined.
