My preschool classroom is two half-day sessions. My AM class has 8 students with special needs along with 4 peer models. My PM class also has 8 students with special needs along with 4 peer models.
My students are just beginning their school experience and having hands-on, active play, and engaging activities available for them create many meaningful experiences!
Many of my students come from low income backgrounds, so having plenty of materials available for them to explore and learn about will help them grow as they begin their journey and then transition on to kindergarten.
My Project
My focus this year in large group times is to create as much active participation as possible! Books are a great way to foster engagement through shared reading. The books I chose allow students to interact during the reading, or create an opportunity for an extension activity after. Of course a few books are just silly as well, because 3-5 year old students love silliness!
An introduction to books at an early age is so important for our students!
They are soaking up so much information, and providing meaningful interactions with each story will help bring engagement and fun to each book! Whether it is a finger play, an interactive book, or a craft or activity while reading, I want my students to be active learners while learning important skills through reading.
These books are also beneficial for helping to meet the various needs of students in my classroom as activities can be differentiated so that all can participate and be active learners in the classroom. Whether a student reads a page through a communication device, makes a choice on a big mac button, or has a specific part to act out during the story, we will all be able to enjoy our shared reading time together.
