My students need a class set of Dread Nation for the final unit in our American History course and some exciting fiction to add to our classroom library!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
When I moved to my school to be the 7th and 8th grade language arts teacher 6 years ago, I had no idea I was taking a job in a little slice of heaven.
My school is a dream school.
It's incredibly diverse--racially, ethnically, culturally, and religiously. It serves an incredible population of students from all over the world and each day I count my lucky stars to be their teacher.
My favorite things about my students include their passion towards activities and pursuing opportunities and, above all, their willingness to really engage in school. I have seen kids make incredible progress and it keeps me inspired to be the best teacher for them that I can be.
My Project
I teach a blended language arts and social studies course. My kids and I will be reading and learning about American history from colonization through Reconstruction. We will be reading gripping fiction to help us contextualize American history and sort out historical details. This fundraising project will bring a class set of an AMAZING new novel--Dread Nation to my students (the book is set in Baltimore!) and some other exciting fiction to add to our classroom library.
When kids read exciting fiction, they care more about reading more and more and they care more about the world around them.
(Look it up! Reading makes people more empathetic.) I want to bring this kind of engaging, inspiring fiction to my kids!
