I teach third grade at a diverse, Title I school in southwest Florida. Sixty-one percent of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our students come from numerous cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Through lots of hard work, our school continues to help our students succeed.
Over the course of each school year, one of my goals is that my students will learn to love to read!
I encourage lots of independent reading time in my classroom, and I encourage my students to read from a range of genres. I also hope that they will carry this love of reading on with them when they are at home and into the future!
My Project
For this project, I am requesting many, many book coupons for Scholastic Book Clubs. These book coupons will allow each and every one of my students in the coming school year to choose two books apiece every single month... to keep! This will help my students build their home libraries with age/level appropriate books they LOVE.
Books in the home and time spent reading are STRONGLY linked to vocabulary development and academic achievement!
I completed a DonorsChoose.org project just like this during the 2017-2018 school year and my students LOVED it. They reminded me on the first of every month that it was "book order day" and impatiently waited for the book shipments to arrive!
I now plan to rewrite this project every year so that my new students can benefit from having their very own books! Thank you for helping my students grow their love of reading by allowing them to choose books of their own!
