This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is located in rural Edgecombe County. Here, 23.9% of the population lives in poverty, which is much higher than the state average of 15.4%. Often, our students are from single-parent households. Many of our students historically score below proficiency on standardized, state assessments, stemming from weak literacy skills. Although our students primarily come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, they have a desire to improve their current situation.
Our students know the key to a better future is to become educated.
Receiving their high school diploma is the first step to a better life. Many of them become first-generation college students, further indicating their desire to fulfill their goals.
My Project
These titles, such as The Serpent King and The Hate U Give, were selected to catch the attention of our students. Some popular movies are based on young adult novels that were chosen to help bring readers back into the Learning Commons.
You can make a real difference in improving literacy at our high school.
Students will be excited to have new books to read once again. By engaging reluctant readers with interesting new books, they can get back into the habit of reading. In addition, the titles selected will align with multiple curricular areas and allow for collaboration. Students will see that reading is our priority and key to their success.
