Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I remember the first time I went to see the ballet in New York City. I went with my ballet class, and I could not take my eyes off the stage. The dancers and the costumes mesmerized me. Unfortunately, my students are usually only mesmerrized by video games and TV when they go home from school. I think that bringing my class to see the ballet may change many lives in my classroom.
I teach third grade at P.S. 130 in the Bronx. We are located in one of the lowest economic congressional districts in the country. Most of my students live in the projects, and have multiple families sharing their small apartments. My students come to school hungry, tired, and worn out from what they experience at home. None of my students has ever been to the theater, especially the ballet.
Students believe they can do what they see. If they only see people working in menial jobs that is what they believe they are going to be doing in the future. However, if I show them dancing and theater, they may also believe that they can get out of poverty and become something more. School is 50 percent learning information to get out of poverty and 50 percent believing that each child can do it. I believe that all of my students can achieve whatever they set their minds to, and I want to show them what is out there.
I want to send my class and two other third- grade classes in my school, with adult chaperones, to "The Nutcracker" ballet at the Fashion Institute of Technology. The shows are on Tuesday December 21, 2004 and Wednesday December 22, 2004. By sending us to the ballet, you too will be able to remember your first time seeing this marvelous art form.
