My students are as diverse as they can get. They are a mix of many races and religions. Although 100% of my students receive free lunch, they come from a variety of income brackets and financial situations. Even when they walk in our classroom, they are a mix of ability levels, social/emotional maturity, and feelings about school and learning. Above all, they are children who deserve to receive the best education possible. My school is in a very nice neighborhood, so it is often misunderstood in regards to our students' needs. The neighborhood has grown past young children. Our students come mostly from run-down apartments. Our neighborhood is still very supportive and involved with our school.
My Project
I have very few board games in my classroom, and I noticed that my students rarely played them. During inside recess, students remain in my classroom and are limited to what they can do. I was surprised to learn that my students didn't know how to play any of the games I had. Not only are board games fun to play, they incorporate many academic and social skills. I would like to provide a variety of fun games and teach them how to play.
I have fond memories of playing board games as a child and I want to pass that love to my students by providing them with a variety of fun, engaging board games to play.
The requested games such as Parcheesi, Connect 4, and Yahtzee are games I fondly remember playing as a child. I want to pass this love of board games onto my students. Other games, such as Othello, Mancala, and Blokus, are great critical-thinking and problem-solving games. The storage bin gives us a place to keep our board games organized and easily accessible to students.
This project will give students the opportunity to engage in fun board games while building critical-thinking skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.
