At P.S. 138 where I teach, there are over 1,400 students. Our school is a Pre-K through eighth grade school. For such a largely populated school, we only have one art teacher. For many of the students, art is a subject area in which they will never experience. I am a fifth grade teacher who believes that to truly understand the written word of a story, the child needs to look at it from as many different angles as possible. One of these views is the artistic manner in which a student can communicate their comprehension of a story. When I do my guided reading section of the ELA, I set up different centers in which the students can work while I read with a small group. I believe that it would be a huge benefit for my thirty students to have a center in which they can express their artistic abilities. I am asking for materials more than just crayons and paper, because art encompasses so much more. I am asking for paint such as water colors and Tempura. I would need paint brushes as well as sponges. Drawing pencils and paper are needed for students to work on pieces of perspective art. Feathers, buttons, pipe cleaners, ice cream pop sticks, cray paper, and other little pieces such as these are great to have for students to create abstract works of art. Drawing paper, sketching paper, and paper to paint on would be important for this project. We would also need glue for some of the projects. I want my students to experience hands-on art, because for many of them, they will never know what it is like to create something meaningful with their hands. Thank you in advance.
