I teach a classroom of 4th grade students on the south side of Chicago. My school is 100% African American and we do our best to teach as much African History in the classroom as possible. We have had African Day, Black Author's Day and a Dr. Martin Luther King Bowl but it just isn't enough to show the beauty of their heritage. I want my student's to value their culture and learn about their African traditions. I would like to bring more Black History into the classroom but funding is low and we don't have a surplus of books by Black Authors. I found this great field trip opportunity where students can go to a carnival site and actually see some of Africa's oldest traditions. Students will witness the beauty and mystique of the various types of music and dance enjoyed by the native people. They will hear different drums used in the tribal drumming. We will see exciting dances and learn the meaning behind the steps. Students will learn how homes were built and about village life by listening to colorful stories. Students will discover how village life from long ago differs from theirs. We can listen to stories and learn how native people lived in harmony with nature. Since the majority of my students will never see where their ancestors came from nor will they ever get to experience what life in Africa is like, I thought we would bring the African Traditions to Chicago!
