This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are from a small rural county on the outskirts of the school district. We are a Title I school where the majority of our students get free and reduced lunch. Unfortunately, we are at risk of losing this funding. They are proud of where they come from and thankfully they are not afraid of a little hard work. There are quite a few students here at the high school that have to work in order to help their family meet their basic needs.
They may not have the best of everything or a lot of anything for that matter, but they have heart and they are willing to share what they do have with each other.
They have history, and that is what makes their bond strong. A lot of the students here have been together since elementary school; some of them have been friends since daycare.
My Project
I envision my students reading these books in class as well as at home. It is my hope that they go out into the school, into other classes, and home telling others about the book they just finished reading. I see my students completing book talks about these books as well as writing their own book reviews and posting them in the classroom and on the class webpage for others to see what they are reading. I believe it is important for students to have books accessible to them that interest them. I am working towards inspiring my students to become lifelong learners and forever lovers of books. My struggling readers need books that are not "baby" books. My stronger readers need books that engage and challenge them. They all need to have books that are high interest and engagement.
These books will be the building blocks towards building a strong and diverse classroom library that will appeal to all of my students.
Having a vast array of books at their fingertips will encourage my students to learn to love reading and share that love with all of those they come in contact with for the rest of their lives.
