This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students range from 3-5 years old. I have 20 students and they are all beautiful and unique in their own way. Out of my twenty students, more than 10 live with or reguarly spend time with their father. I have never had a class like this. Usually my students are being raised by their mother, grandmotehr, and sometimes an Aunt. Many may say that its no big deal, but when your are a teacher in a poverty stricken neighboorhood IT'S A BIG DEAL!!
My Project
This is the first time in the four years that I have been teaching at my school that more than half of my students' fathers are actively involved in their child's life and learning. It is such an amazing thing to see. Every year we celebrate the fathers and men who are in our students lives by inviting them into the classroom. We usually have an activity for them to help the children with, we present them we a certificate, they have lunch and then it's over. This year, I am hoping that we can do something bigger to celebrate our fathers and their children. "Take Your Father to School Day" is May 18th and is fastly approaching. Unfortunately I didn't think of this idea until now. I think that it would be really wonderful if the three PreK classes in my building could have a field day for our event. We could rotate each classroom from the requested bounce house, to ball area, to jump ropes and free play, create a day that neither the fathers nor students will forget!
