Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a fourth grade classroom teacher in a low-income, urban, primarily minority school, I know that many of my students have never been even two miles from their homes. Most are functioning below grade level and many have "flunked" at least once. At ages nine and ten, they already feel defeated and are unwilling to take risks. This breeds a classroom culture of pessimism and negativity, and time that should be spent bringing my students up to grade level is instead spent disciplining. My students deserve far more.
I would like to take my students on a 3-day, 2-night trip to the Camp Hanes Conference Center in King, NC at the beginning of the 2005-06 school year. I have been associated with this facility for many years and have seen firsthand the miracles that happen in its beautiful green surroundings. Children leave the rock climbing wall feeling confident that there is a way to tackle any challenge. They struggle as a pair to the top of the wobbly "Giant Ladder", and realize that they could never have made it up those rungs alone. Whooshing down the zip-line over the beautiful lake, they rediscover simple joy. My students will also have the opportunity to paddle a canoe, explore a creek teeming with critters, and hike a beautiful mountain trail. They will gain new skills, understand the value of teamwork, and create life-long memories. Above all, they will gain confidence in their ability to successfully conquer life's challenges.
Thank you for the serious consideration given this request. I want this to be the best year my students have ever had, and I know this experience will create the confidence and community we need in order to make that come true! Working as a team, my students can achieve the significant academic gains that will leave them on equal footing with their peers in more affluent communities. Again, thank you. I can't tell you how much this opportunity means to my students and myself.
