Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
KIPP Ascend Charter School was founded in 2003 as a public, tuition-free, college preparatory middle school for underserved kids from the Austin neighborhood in Chicago's West Side. After expanding by one grade level each year, our original 5th grade students are now 8th graders, and our school is operating at full capacity, serving over 300 students in grades 5 through 8. With a student body composed of 98% African American students and 2% Latino students, 96% of them qualify for the federal free/reduced lunch program. Our students commit to attending class from 7:25 AM to 5:00 PM during the week, every other Saturday for 4 hours, and for 4 weeks in the summer --- all told, nearly 70% more time in class than traditional Chicago Public Schools.
With all of this extra class time and commitment, KIPP Ascend students are achieving amazing results. Last year, our 7th graders scored in the top 2% of all non-selective public schools citywide on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test!
This is my first year as the school's Physical Education teacher, and I am dedicated to offering a comprehensive health education program that will encourage a more active lifestyle for our students by promoting healthy habits and teamwork. As a way to enrich the heavy academic focus during the regular school day, this year we are starting an extracurricular athletic program that will be open to seventh and eighth grade students who are maintaining high academic standards while achieving significant academic gains. Our students have expressed a strong interest in playing basketball, volleyball, and soccer, and we would like to establish teams for both boys and girls. Each of the six teams will consist of approximately 15 players who must remain academically eligible during the season.
Our hope is to develop boys and girls volleyball team. We are eager for our kids to begin playing on organized team sports at KIPP Ascend. I thank you in advance for allowing some of the most deserving kids the opportunity to partake in sports. Thank You.
