This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Learning is an active experience; that is, people learn as they interact with others to...construct meaning out of the world and their experiences in it" ~Oakes & Lipton (2012). Technology is a vital part of creating a classroom in which students learn as much from each other as they do from me.

I am extremely excited to begin teaching First Grade at a school whose staff shares my vision of education.

Renaissance is a school focused on students learning collaboratively from each other and through multiple modalities. Our students come from the surrounding neighborhood which has a high poverty rate and one of the highest drop-out rates in the city. We are committed to creating a rigorous environment in which students feel safe and supported so that they can do their best learning. Our classrooms are filled with student voices, and our hallways proudly display student artwork. One of the biggest challenges our school faces is a severe lack of classroom technology. Currently, my personal laptop will be the only technology available to me in my classroom next year. It can be extremely difficult to engage all learners in a lesson if they can't see the materials! A document camera and projector would solve this problem.

My Project

There are endless ways that a document camera and projector help to improve learning for all students in the classroom. First and foremost, these tools will allow me to display lesson materials, models, online resources, and student work for the whole class to see. With 25 first graders, it is essential that all students feel able to access the lesson in order for them to do their best learning. Being able to see the materials is an important first step! This technology is useful across content areas. In reading, I will be able to display stories and songs that are essential to beginning readers. In math, I will be able to model the use of manipulatives and other learning tools for the whole class to see. An important part of first grade science is learning to make careful observations. With a document camera, I will be able to display specimen for students to observe. Finally, a projector will allow me to bring geography to life through online resources like Google Earth.

A document camera and projector are essential learning tools that will help me build a strong classroom community.

Everything from a cherished piece of writing or artwork to a treasured object from home can be displayed for the class. This will help my students to get to know each other as individuals so that they feel safe in my classroom and supported by their peers. With your help, my students will leave my classroom with the skills and confidence that will allow them to be lifelong learners.
