My students need exposure to what is happening in the world around them in the engaging format provided by the New York Times Upfront magazine.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are largely economically disadvantaged and have very challenging lives outside of our school. They also have very little idea that they have any ability to impact their communities and the larger world around them. They do not understand that change can start with them and that they CAN change the world.
My students have great potential and abilities but have not been challenged, to this point, to reach it.
They do not see how they fit into the larger national and global community, nor do they understand that they can impact that larger world. I would like to interest them in rest of our country and our world, so that they can make contributions to them.
My students, like many adolescents, are familiar with what happens in their homes and neighborhoods but do not understand what is happening in their nation and around the world. In this global society, they need to have a better understanding of national affairs and our place in the world community.
As Juniors in high school, they are very close to having to be adults in our interconnected society.
They need that understanding to be engaged and active citizens and, hopefully, make our world a better place. Our hometown newspaper is only published in print form a few days a week, with affordable subscriptions to schools becoming less frequent. Additionally, the Upfront magazine, published by the New York Times, presents current news stories from a perspective to which students can easily relate, and I can easily incorporate into my classroom.
