Help me give my students a class set of an amazing an empowering novel - Black Panther: the Young Prince.

My Students

Like typical middle school students, my students are smart, kind, passionate, and funny. Their interests range from music to football to video games to reading to hanging out with friends.

Unlike typical middle school students, my students need special supports to communicate, read, and write.

Access to technology gives them the opportunity to learn and practice these critical skills. Some of my students have trouble communicating verbally and are learning to communicate using speech generating devices.

Some of my students have high verbal and comprehension skills, but have trouble reading, and are learning to complete reading activities independently on a computer using text to speech. Some of my students are excellent readers and spellers, but have trouble writing with a pencil, and are working on building their typing skills to complete their writing assignments using a computer.

My students have to work hard to learn basic skills that many of us take for granted. They continue to amaze us with what they are able to accomplish.

My Project

Every year my students look forward to our final ELA unit of the year - the adapted novel unit. Students read along while listening to the book on CD, then (with the help of adapted materials) answer comprehension questions, retell events, write summaries, make inferences, and complete characterization activities. After finishing the novel, students watch the movie The Black Panther and then write an essay comparing and contrasting the book and the movie.

A class set of the novel Black Panther: the Young Prince will bring a new, exciting, and empowering novel to my students, who deserve to see themselves represented in the texts we read.
