This spring I will be teaching "Romeo and Juliet" to my ninth-grade English class. This unit will culminate in a performance of scenes from the play. I have been searching for a local production of a Shakespearean play that would be suitable for my students so that they will be able to see and hear Shakespearean language and theatrical conventions in real life, not just on the page. I fully believe that it is impossible to truly appreciate drama (especially Shakespeare) without witnessing a live performance.
Denzel Washington is starring in a production of "Julius Caesar" on Broadway this spring. Despite the fact that my school is located just blocks from Times Square, hardly any of my students have ever been to a professional theatrical production. I desperately want my students to experience the wonder of Shakespeare firsthand, and their admiration for Denzel Washington would make the experience that much more meaningful.
We have reserved sixty tickets for my fifty-five students and five chaperones. We are cobbling the money together from a variety of sources, including school funds, student contributions, and fundraising activities. I am requesting a donation to pay for ten students' tickets.
I teach at a brand-new public school (we currently have 110 students) that specializes in preparing students for college and the professional world. I am one of only six teachers here, and we devote hours of time outside of school to bring our lessons to life. This performance connects directly to our school's mission: students will interact with adults and professionals outside of school, practice theater etiquette, and take advantage of an amazing cultural offering just blocks from our campus. This performance will make this unit unforgettable for my students and will enhance their appreciation for and understanding of Shakespeare. Please help me bring the Bard to life for my students.
