My students are a mix from all walks of life in Oakland. In my classroom there are young people who have dealt with gangs in their communities or families, and those who have only seen them in movies. My classroom has people who live in cars or in family members' couches, and people who have every console system and new shoe. I teach students from dozens of different ethnic backgrounds, many different religious backgrounds, and all different social backgrounds. Part of my job is to create one community from these disparate students.
We have come really far in our first semester!
34% of my students' grades have increased from the beginning of the semester to the end, and only 13% have decreased. My kids work really well in their groups, and we have had great success with group research projects and presentations. But now our room has no heat, and we need your help.
My Project
Our title one school has been slowly cutting back on classroom resources, as our district is in a budget crisis. This has impacted teachers in a lot of ways; for example, we've run out of paper, and teachers not getting paid for covering other classes. This is bad enough, but is workable.
But now it's starting to impact my students.
In December our classroom was heated to about 75 degrees, and now it's heated to about 65 degrees. My students wear hoodies and coats, and are often still cold in class. We may not be freezing, but it's cold enough that focusing for an hour is a struggle. There are no accommodations I can make to help this - we just need residences.
