My students need an opportunity to independently read about STEAM subject matter and current events. In this rapidly changing world, it is critical to provide a sense of informational equity to all children. WE need Scholastic and Time for Kids magazines.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I school located in the Cole neighborhood with 98% of students eligible to receive free or reduced lunch. Our student population is made up of black and Latino students, with 50% of students being English Learners. Our school is a central hub for the neighborhood community; providing gang-reduction programming with Open Door, English classes for parents with Focus Points, cooking classes with NAEP, free legal services, partnership with the Denver Public Library, parent advocacy groups with Together Colorado, and after-school and summer programming with the YMCA.
We are now on the verge of being a green rated school (which means that we are effectively educating students) on the districts School Performance Framework.
During the 2017-2018 school year, our teachers have received weekly professional development, coaching, and data team meetings. Each class participates daily in an hour of guided reading with a strong school wide emphasis on K-3 literacy. This has led to outstanding academic achievement, that has already dwarfed previous years scores. We have also made major improvements in regards to our school culture with the help of our school psychologist and restorative justice coordinator.
My Project
These materials will make a great deal of difference in the lives of students because they will be able to independently access STEAM subject matter and current events. Scholastic News, TIME For Kids, and grade level specific science texts will open the door to a world of wonder.
Students will be taking science as a special, but it is important that they have independent books that will support them in their learning.
In our classroom it will be highly beneficial for students to engage in dialogue about current events and other science topics covered in class. Thank you for supporting our students.
