Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My scientifically inquisitive students are a diverse group of fifth and sixth graders who live in an urban city in Bergen County, NJ. Although they are diverse, a large percentage come from homes where English is not their first language. This group of 86 students has a passion for learning, but many are struggling readers with low comprehension skills. These learners benefit from hands-on learning, that brings difficult science concepts to life.
Please help my students understand life science, by bringing life into my classroom.
Many of my students have a difficult time understanding concepts because they are not exposed to much outside of their city. Many have never been to a beach, or countryside before. Their experience in exploring animals is limited because of their exposure. I would love to bring life science to life for my friends by welcoming class pets into my classroom. By having hands-on experience with these creatures, we can explore their adaptations, physical structures, and behavior. We can examine food webs and chains as well having a discussion about habits, ecosystems, and niches.
Please keep the love of life alive for my urban city students!
My Project
These materials will help support my 5th and 6th grade students in understanding life science concepts. My fifth graders will benefit from learning about animal adaptations and how different animal parts help them survive in their environments. The Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches are perfect for this, as they can only be found in Madagascar and do not look like, or behave like other cockroaches.
Help my students LOVE life through learning with real animals!
My sixth grade students will learn about ecology through observing and interacting with land snails, pill and snow bugs. Being in an urban district, these students do not have much access to animals in their backyards. Having these animals accessible to my students would allow them to appreciate life and the curricula in which they are learning.
Please help make this a reality for my wonderful students!
