Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hello! I am a 1st grade teacher in West Los Angeles. I am beginning my 5th year teaching, and my third year in general education. I work at a diverse Title I school. I work with a wonderful group of students who come from a variety of backgrounds. Our classroom includes a range of ethnicities and cultures.
My students have boundless energy and loads of enthusiasm for exploring new things about the world.
In our classroom we work together to meet the needs of all learners and support each other. Students read stories together, work on challenging tasks together, and start every day with songs together. As a team, my students are growing their awareness about others and the role they play as citizens of the world!
My Project
Social studies and science are essential to any classroom, but often the materials and resources for these subjects are missing in schools. My goal in creating this project is to attain resources that I can use to build a solid foundation for my first grade students. From the first day of school my students have been asking, "When do we get to do science?" My hope is that when this project is complete I can tell them, "We start today!"
The resources in this project will provide opportunities for my students to engage with essential content in science and social studies.
They will have the opportunity to explore new topics and interact with them in exciting ways.
The social studies curriculum introduces students to geography, economics, civics, sociology, and government through monthly units. These units introduce social studies to children through topics such as Hispanic Heritage Month, Spending and Saving, The Three Branches of Government, and more. Each month includes differentiated reading, ebooks, and hands on activities to engage students. I know that this resource will promote rich classroom discussions and encourage continued study of the world.
The Next Generation Science bundle is aligned with the new science standards. Students will learn about space, light, sound, and organisms. The curriculum includes experiments, interactive activities, and home-school connections! With this resource my students will have science activities to look forward to every week of the year.
The final resource in this project will help me bring science and social studies into our daily community building meetings.
With these materials I can engage my students with important learning about the world around them. One of my ultimate goals as a teacher is to help create caring citizens of the world. This project will help me get closer to that goal.
