This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom is filled with 24 eager to learn second grade children who are interested in the world around them. We are a public school located outside of Philadelphia. We are a 1-8 building with 100% free breakfast and lunch. Almost all of our children receive breakfast and lunch at school.
My students are always questioning the world around them.
Their minds are sponges constantly looking for answers. Some go home after school with no help for homework; others yearn for someone to read with at night.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will help in implementing a Home Reading Program. Research has shown that students who read at home are more successful in school. Reading develops their imagination and language skills. Spending time with family reading, and talking, can bring parents closer to their children
Reading at home is not a problem in homes where books are abundant but unfortunately that is not the case where I teach.
My project will allow students to take home books nightly to read with their families. No more excuses about not having enough books at home. Students will use the envelopes to carry the books back and forth!
