I am a science teacher for grades 6- 8, in a low-income, inner-city school with a diverse population. My students are faced with many challenges, both in and out of the classroom. Throughout the school year, it is my goal to promote diversity, equity, and the love of science. My school is a Title I (which means a school with large concentrations of low-income students) school. Some of the students in my classes are special needs students who suffer from attention deficit disorder (ADHD), hearing impairments, and/or have other types of special needs.
Regardless of their challenges, though, the majority of the students are very determined and eager to succeed in science.
They love to learn about new concepts in science and partake in any science activity or lab. In spite of their personal experiences, most of my students are very active, enthusiastic learners who possess a thirst for knowledge.
The colored pencils and markers will help my students make visualizations that are integral to their scientific thinking. In our science lab/class we rely on diagrams, graphs, videos, photographs, and other images to help us understand what we are learning. We are constantly outlining and sketching in our interactive notebooks. I believe my students would take ownership of their learning if given the chance to use color.
Drawing is very beneficial as a learning tool and as a diagnostic tool.
Drawing and detailing in color provides more precise observations.
My classroom setting is not conducive for independant work, with
up to 30 students in a small room. Having privacy shields will help to remove some of the distractions and keep my students focused on their work.
Having the addition of colored pencils, markers, and privacy shields, will allow my students to be both creative and independant within the science lab.
