Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives. ~Clay P. Bedford. And I hope, as a teacher, I will create curiosity in the classroom through the use of technology.
We have 3 kindergarten classes.
Each class is an all day kindergarten with 24 students. 87% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, meaning these students are living at or below the poverty line. This year in each of our classrooms, about 90% of students are learning English as a second language. Our students have a variety of family units from mother and father, to single parents, to grandparents raising grandchildren or multiple families in the home. Our students have a wide variety of living arrangements: they live in houses, apartments, trailers, or motels. Some of our students start school with outside barriers, but you would never know it, because they are the best bunch of kids you'd ever meet in your life.
My Project
If you are familiar with California budget cuts, then you know that public schools were hit hard. Our school has a few classrooms with interactive whiteboards, projectors, and document cameras BUT the funds have run out and our school does not have the funds to purchase these items for our kindergarten classrooms. I am the lead in science, therefore, I teach science to all 3 kindergarten classes, while incorporating ELD (English Learner Development), I go to each classroom. This technology would allow my students to view things on the computer over the SmartBoard screen. Having a document camera, will allow all students to view how to do a science investigation. It is difficult to explain and try to show students how to do the science investigation, when not all students can see what I'm doing. Having a SmartBoard would solve this problem. My students deserve to have the same technology, as other schools. We shouldn't be penalized because the state of California has less funds.
This project will give my students what other schools in our area have.
This technology is important for all students. This will only enhance their learning, a computer with the internet could be hooked up to this and having that at a touch of a button for kids would be an awesome resource in teaching and learning. Your donation will put a smile on 72 little 4 and 5 year old faces!
