Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 4th grade in Redwood City. Hoover is located in a low-income area; over 75% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch. For almost all of my students English is their second language, and our challenge is to simultaneously build their English as well as academic skills.

There are many resources available to us. However, we are unable to utilize some of them because we do not have a DVD player in our classroom. This piece of technology is especially important to our students because many of them rarely leave Redwood City and have little experience outside of their immediate surroundings. When we study various topics we support their understanding in English by watching relevant videos. For example, when learning about the missions we watch a movie that shows Native Americans making adobe bricks from scratch. This builds their skills across the curriculum. Our challenge is that we only have a VCR player, and many of the new materials are only available in DVD format.

The DVD player will allow us to use DVDs with the students for years to come. Educational videos will be shown that support the curriculum which will enhance learning.
