Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Farragut is a low-income neighborhood school. Too many students walk through our doors feeling as though they have no option but to attend Farragut because they were not smart enough to get into a more academically driven school. Farragut has had an exceedingly rough reputation these past few decades, which adds to our status as a school of hard knocks. Nonetheless we are making great strides to improve both academics as well as morale! One of the steps we'd like to take is to give all of our Advanced Placement chemistry students lab coats with their names across the back, like football jerseys. These lab coats would be earned by amassing a set number of points through various science activities. Additional badges would be awarded for other achievements. The lab coats will be saved for the next year's class, with the name and badges being removed and given to the graduating class. We encourage our AP chemistry students to give presentations to the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes throughout the year. We would also like to take students to some of the elementary feeder schools to present there as well. Imagine you're a freshman sitting in your environmental science class. The teacher hands the class over to four seniors in professional, yet fun and personalized lab coats. They bring out demonstrations, share stories, and tell you about the colleges they were just accepted to. These are people worth emulating. If they can do it and feel proud and secure about it, couldn't you? This is the message we'd like to develop. Science is worth the effort. Working hard is an attribute to be admired. A's should make you feel proud. In addition to building strong communication and content skills, these presentations serve to strengthen the community as a whole. Individuals will feel secure and gain confidence in their ability to excel in science. A class set of lab coats would add a layer of professionalism, boost confidence, and send a strong, positive message to the school community. These lab coats will also look great in a class photo with our thank you note!!!
