Being a special needs teacher in a high poverty area, I need creative and innovative ways to make a connection with my students. Now that we have virtual learning, I have more challenges than I ever thought possible.
My students need interesting, motivating and engaging resources that will support them emotionally and socially through movement.
My students have learning disabilities, attention problems, emotional traumas and language barriers that make learning more challenging for them.
My Project
This grant will allow us materials for a Trauma-informed wellness program. Our school currently offers a Social Emotional Learning program that is taught daily in every classroom. There are students that require more practice and instruction time. The materials from this grant would allow us to offer a daily practice of wellness that includes: breathing, mindfulness, creativity, mindful movement, and community building activities.
Students will be allowed to safely participate in activities that involve feeling and emotions while learning strategies to build success, resilience and make goals for themselves for a future using a trauma informed yoga program for elementary students.
