I am a teacher of 16 third grade students in a small, rural school district. Our school district serves approximately 50% free and reduced-price lunch, with many families living in poverty.
The third-grade students in my classroom are bright, curious, energetic students who are eager to learn.
They are even more eager to learn when given new, engaging, hands-on learning experiences that stimulate their brains and challenge them to think in new ways. They are all so unique and have such wonderful passions and dreams.
Third grade is a pivotal point in a reader's life. Before third grade, students are learning to read; after third grade, they read to learn. Researchers have found that in the fourth grade, many students "show a decline in their interest of reading and a gradual disengagement in school." Students need to have the opportunities and resources to find books they'll fall in love with. I want my students to build and expand on their foundation of reading by having access to new and exciting books.
Creating a passion for reading is one of the best things I can do for my students, and while I have many books in my classroom library, many are outdated and not interesting to my students.
Help me keep my students out of the fourth-grade slump statistic by giving them the gift of a book. Not only will reading help them grow academically, but it will also let them explore Prince Edward Island with Anne of Green Gables, take a trip in a Phantom Tollbooth, and laugh alongside so many other fun characters.
