My Students
I work with an amazing group of students who come from all walks of life. My school is incredibly diverse and full of students who are working to break cycles of poverty, incarceration, and abuse. Many of my students will not only be first-generation high school graduates but will go on to be the first in their family to attend and graduate from college. They work hard and make me so hopeful about the future of our world as they are constantly showing love, grace, perseverance, and determination.
My Project
I am requesting two class sets of the graphic novel Maus in order to expose my AP Literature students to the use of symbolism in literature. Graphic novels catch their attention, provide a deeper understanding of how symbols can tell their own story, and this will be a great book to pair with their reading of Night by Elie Wiesel. My goal is to expose my students to as many diverse experiences through literature as possible and having the ability to use the novel Maus will help as we look at the human experience through the lens of the Holocaust.
