My students need wiring, tools, and the materials to create their own robotic hands and the Arduino microcontrollers for coding and controlling these projects as well as future programming projects.
Our kids are creative and enthusiastic about their world and understanding how it works. So many thrive on not only learning something new, but are genuinely excited to share their discoveries with their fellow students. We have a diverse group of students who speak twelve different languages. However, we have one of the strongest communities of any school I have been in. My goal is to empower these positive and inquisitive individuals to create, collaborate, and innovate for a better world.
My Project
Unleashing the creativity and innovation begins with the technology to empower student ideas. Our students will investigate the world of STEAM and robotics and how they can use programming to enhance the capability of their projects.
Coding is an essential skill for projects in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and increasingly in Art and Design solutions.
Using the raw materials, students will learn and use knowledge of circuits to control motors and the attached materials to emulate human hands in their robotics projects. The micro-servos, bands, and other materials are used to add the motion of the prototyes. Using the Arduino microcontroller as the brain for their project, the next step will be to develop the computer code to control and operate their designs. They will use problem solving and collaborate on writing the computer code needed for making the robotic hands complete tasks. The final stage will be for students to employ sensors using velostat and wiring and build a wearable glove that senses the wearer's motion and duplicates those actions through the robotic hand. The breadboards and jumper wires allow the student to test their circuit design from the robotic hand motors to the Arduino microcontroller. This project was developed by Microsoft's Hacking STEM team who have created an entire library of STEM-based learning experiences. The materials will also be able to be reused for future and even more sophisticated projects.
