My students come from families of low socioeconomic status. 100% of the students at our school qualify for free breakfast and lunch, as well as supper for our after-school students. We also have a pantry that supplies food to our most needing families. We provide for our students before, during, and after school and help families meet their basic needs.
Despite the many challenges they face, my students work hard at school every day.
They come ready and eager to learn. They get excited when they master something new. They have incredible potential to do great.
Like many schools, technology is very limited at my school. We only have three computers in my classroom which are very old and slow. We also have access to the computer lab but only once a week. Without daily computer use, my students don't get enough practice typing so most of their time is spent trying to log in to the computer. They simply do not get enough time working on the computer to develop the skills necessary to use a computer efficiently.
Daily computer use is essential for students to learn typing and technical problem-solving skills which they will need for computer-based state testing and potentially for future jobs in the tech industry in our increasingly technology-oriented world.
We need 4 laptops in our classroom so that students can use them regularly and build up these 21st-century skills. We also need privacy boards to encourage students to focus during computer time. With your help, we can bring my classroom into the 21st-Century with technologies that we are currently lacking. My district provides us with several research-based programs that students can use to reinforce reading and math skills. With regular computer-use, my students will be able to practice typing and technical skills as wells as academic skills.
