Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The 5 and 6 year olds that make up my class come from very diverse economic backgrounds. Some come from two parent households, some come from households with only one parent that may be working more than one job. Some may come from households where parents do not speak English and therefore are unable to help their child academically.
These children need the opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments!
They need to be in an environment where the learning that they are demonstrating is acknowledged and celebrated!
My Project
My first graders do not have access to many books at home. Therefore it is important for me to provide them with books to read at home. Book Bags would provide me a tool to keep the books safe.
"There is no substitute for books in the life of a child." Mary Ellen Chase was so right about this.
If children are not reading at home, they are not going to make gains. Many of my students start way behind and one reason is access to books. I am trying to help by allowing them to take books from our classroom library home so they can read!
I have tried to use plastic bags, the problem being is that they are not very durable. These bags would not only be able to be used by my current students, but students for years to come! That is so many students that would benefit from these!
