Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Bring history to life in our classroom! Students often view history as boring or detached from the current events and struggles of the present. These books will bring wonder, excitement, and curiosity into learning about history, the lessons it teaches, and how the past has shaped the present.
We are the smallest school district in our ISD (only 2.5 square miles).
We have a very diverse population with a majority of our students being Hispanic. Many of our students are also English Language Learners. We have a 95% free and reduced lunch population. With all of these factors, we also have a very passionate district. We are full of history, and believe in the students and the population that we teach. Our teachers are dedicated and always willing to try new ways of teaching to meet the needs of our students.
My Project
These books have been selected to be used as Interactive Read Alouds for a Historical Fiction Unit for English Language Arts. The main goal for this unit is to introduce students to numerous text elements and topics within historical fiction texts and to have students write their own historical fiction piece. The Interactive Read Alouds cover historical periods ranging from the War of 1812, through the Civil Rights movement, and up to the Vietnam Memorial. The books also range in setting from the original 13 colonies, westward expansion, Holland, Korea, and China. The books will be used to aid instruction of reading and writing strategies such as text features, setting, language and time, validity of facts, problem and solution, developing characters, point of view, understanding audience, visualizing, and building tension. Students will have regular access to these books during the unit as well as after in our classroom library.
Students often tend to be egocentric in their thinking.
They do not get the opportunity to think outside of the walls of their classroom or the proximity of their neighborhoods. Students will get a glimpse of the past and reflect on how it directly impacts their lives today. The universal themes covered by these texts will show students the importance of standing up for what is right and fighting for what you believe in. Students will carry those ideas with them forever.
