Bring Geometry into the 3-D World for 4th Graders!
My students need 5 sets of 3-D Magnetic shapes to bring geometry off the page & into their hands. We all learn best by discovery, and what better way than to build their own shapes!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students need, make that deserve, the best teaching materials that I can possibly provide to foster a sense of discovery when it comes to math. And it breaks my heart that I cannot provide simple learning tools to facilitate their abilities to grasp three dimensional objects in math. But you can!
I am so lucky to have thirty amazing fourth graders this year in my care.
Their love of learning inspires me to come to work each and every day and to fight for them and what they deserve. These children need to discover math and all it's wonders, not be taught it straight from a textbook. They need to touch it, build it, discover it! I teach in a very high poverty area, most of my students come from homes with single parents, some of which are migrant farm workers, working so hard to make it. The families give what they can when they can, and are so proud when they do, but like so many are struggling with just surviving and cannot possibly support a project such as this. I am very creative and I improvise a whole lot in my room to make due with whatever supplies I can salvage from anywhere. But these magnets I simply cannot create on my own.
My Project
With these magnetic shapes, I will not be standing in front of thirty little lives, lecturing them on the properties of a square or prism. I will be handing them the shapes and letting them discover for themselves, what makes a shape a shape. And if they put two shapes together, what happens. The sense of discovery and ownership of creating math, how amazing will that be! Remember what it was like when you were in elementary school, and you just got to manipulate objects to get them to do what you wanted? That sense of pride you felt when you could say, "Look what I did?" THAT'S what I want for my students. Please help make that a reality.
Money is tight, I know that, you know that.
I would love to be able to personally provide these 3-D magnets for my students, but I just cannot do it. With your gift, you will be allowing students that struggle with math, see it come to life right before their eyes. They will be able to create and discover and learn about shapes in ways never possible before!
