Our students are curious, fun, and creative, and every day, they immerse themselves in a Spanish-speaking environment that prepares them for an increasingly connected and international world. We create stories together in class, analyze cultural products and practices, and build a warm community based on fun, trust, and understanding - all in Spanish! Our students speak many and multiple languages, and Spanish class is yet another opportunity for them to expand their world and communicative ability.
The 6th-8th grade students in a diverse Washington suburb at a Title 1 school represent a variety of cultures and backgrounds.
Our classroom communities are united by a love of stories, and a fascination with the many characters in life. Students eagerly share about exciting plot twists, insufferable antagonists, and heroes worth looking up to. The stories stay with our students, and bring us together to tell and retell them.
My Project
By bringing quality fiction and nonfiction literature to our classroom library, our students will be able to achieve massive growth in their vocabulary, understanding, and communicative ability. Students need a variety of materials to find a good fit, and this project reflects a spectrum of requisite skill levels and text types.
Research shows that reading is the most powerful way to increase proficiency in any language.
As a first-year teacher, I am looking to build a lasting library of materials for my students to enjoy over and over again in their quest for Spanish proficiency. I currently have enough reading materials for each student to have a book of their own to read during our daily free reading time, but very little variety. This project will give each student a chance to find "their" book - the one whose content they devour with intense curiosity, forgetting that it's in Spanish because they just want to know what happens next.
By donating to this project, you are giving our students a chance to become proficient Spanish speakers and global citizens - an invaluable gift for their (and our) future! ¡Queremos leer! – We want to read!
