Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year, my small early childhood school in the Bronx is adding a second grade for the first time. I have been given the opportunity to create a curriculum that will challenge and motivate our students. My students, whom I taught in first grade, have become terrific readers, and are bright, thoughtful, curious people who love to read, and love to learn. Therefore, I wanted to create a curriculum that will not only cover the reading and math curriculum mandated by the city, but that will also give them exposure to the larger world. That will motivate, engage social studies and science units, and through high quality literature that connect to our social studies and science units. Since my school is only now taking on second grade, we currently do not have any books that are on an appropriate reading level for my students. Many of the books that we do have are intended for the purposes of teaching children the technical skills of reading, and are definitely not the thought-provoking, challenging, motivating literature that I want for my students. My students are accomplished, technical readers, and since they know how to read, I want to make sure that they see books as a connection to the larger world, and as a source of new ideas, meaningful and relevant to their own lives. I have carefully chosen books that I believe will be challenging and motivating for them, which will support the science and social studies that I want my students to learn. Unfortunately, my administration has informed me that there is no money in the budget for new books for second grade. Therefore, I am requesting sets of high quality, intellectually challenging, exciting books for my students. These books will be enjoyed and analyzed by my class, as well as the other second grade classes, totaling around eighty students. These books will be used each year in the future, touching the lives of hundreds of children.
